Neiphiu Rio Urges Centre’s Intervention for Safe Release of Six Abducted in Manipur, Seeks Coordinated Peace Efforts

Kohima, June 2: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has called for urgent intervention by the Centre to secure the safe release of six individuals allegedly abducted in Manipur, while appealing for coordinated efforts to restore peace and harmony in the region.

In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rio stated that he had already spoken to Shah on May 29 and conveyed the deep concern and anguish of the Naga community over the incident. He described the abduction as a serious humanitarian issue and urged the Centre to intensify efforts to trace the missing persons, ensure their safe return at the earliest, and bring those responsible to justice.

According to Rio, Amit Shah assured him that the matter would be treated with highest priority and that all necessary measures would be undertaken to rescue the victims, identify the perpetrators and ensure legal action in accordance with the law. The Chief Minister added that he had also held discussions with leaders of the United Naga Council, including its president Ng Lorho, as well as senior officials from the Union Home Ministry, the Intelligence Bureau and state authorities, noting that multiple agencies are actively engaged in addressing the situation.

Rio further appealed to all stakeholders to exercise restraint and cooperate with authorities in efforts to secure the release of the abducted individuals and maintain stability in the region. He also urged the United Naga Council to persuade Naga volunteers reportedly holding 14 Kuki individuals to facilitate their safe and unconditional release.

Emphasising the need for dialogue, compassion and reconciliation, the Chief Minister said the situation must be resolved through humanitarian values and mutual understanding. He also welcomed appeals from church bodies and community organisations calling for the release of all innocent persons held by any group.

Rio stressed that coordinated efforts involving Naga civil society organisations, church leaders and community stakeholders would be crucial in ensuring the safe return of the six abducted individuals and preventing further escalation of tensions. He added that collective cooperation remains essential to restoring peace and stability in the region.
