Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Tuesday convened a high-level stakeholder meeting at its Maligaon headquarters to promote containerized movement of tea by rail. The meeting brought together key players from the tea industry, including logistics operators, exporters, producers, and associations, to explore ways to enhance rail-based transportation. With Assam producing nearly 160 million kg of export-oriented tea annually, the focus was on improving efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring reliable logistics.
Railway officials highlighted the benefits of containerized rail transport, such as faster transit, reduced handling loss, and eco-friendly operations. Discussions centred on improving connectivity, strengthening container handling facilities, and streamlining coordination between stakeholders to attract more tea traffic to railways.

NFR also reported strong freight performance in FY 2025–26, recording 11.4 million tonnes of loading, a 6% increase from the previous year. Unloading operations rose significantly to over 13,000 rakes. To further boost infrastructure, NFR is developing modern freight terminals, including projects at Sairang in Mizoram and Molvom in Nagaland, along with Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals across the region. The initiative underscores NFR’s commitment to sustainable, customer-focused logistics solutions aimed at supporting the tea industry and driving economic growth in the Northeast.
