HAFLONG, Aug. 9: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has assured the North Cachar Autonomous Council (NCHAC) that repair work on NH-27 in Dima Hasao will be completed within a month following complaints over the poor condition of the highway.
NCHAC Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa chaired a review meeting with NHAI officials at the CEM Conference Hall in Haflong to discuss road-related concerns.
The meeting focused on damaged stretches of NH-27, potholes inside the Maibang tunnel, ongoing highway construction at Harangajao and pending compensation related to land acquisition.
NHAI Project Director-in-charge Tushar Biswas assured the council that immediate repair work would be completed within a month. He also said the ongoing highway construction would be completed within five months.
NH-27 forms part of the East-West Corridor, a major highway project conceived during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to connect Silchar in southern Assam with Saurashtra in Gujarat.
Vajpayee announced the project on October 10, 1998, while its foundation stone was laid in 2004. The approximately 3,300-km Silchar-Saurashtra corridor was initially targeted for completion by 2007.
