No Proposal to Hike Fuel Prices, Says Centre, Calls Reports ‘Fake’

National, April 23: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Thursday dismissed reports suggesting a post-election increase in petrol and diesel prices, describing such claims as “fake” and misleading.

In an official statement issued on April 23, the ministry clarified that no proposal is currently under consideration to revise fuel prices. It said reports circulating on the issue were intended to create “fear and panic” among the public and urged citizens to rely only on verified information.

Addressing concerns triggered by speculation on social media, the ministry emphasised that India has maintained relative stability in petrol and diesel prices over the past four years. It noted that the government, along with public sector oil companies, has taken steps to shield consumers from fluctuations in international crude oil markets.

The clarification comes amid rising global crude prices, which had fuelled speculation about a possible increase in domestic fuel rates after the electoral process. The ministry stated that oil marketing companies have absorbed cost variations to ensure stable retail pricing.

According to the government, this approach forms part of a broader strategy to contain inflationary pressures and maintain price stability in the domestic fuel market.
