Overloaded Dumpers from Meghalaya Raise Alarm in Assam Border Villages

Guwahati, May 8: Unchecked movement of overloaded stone-laden dumpers from Meghalaya into Assam has triggered concern in several border villages, with residents alleging severe damage to fragile rural roads due to heavy night-time traffic.

Locals claimed that nearly 15 to 16 overloaded dumpers entered Assam every night through the Sukurberia route along the Assam–Meghalaya border under the East Kamrup Forest Division. Villagers said the narrow rural roads were unable to withstand the constant movement of heavy vehicles carrying stone and timber.

The issue also raised questions over enforcement despite the presence of a Forest Beat Office at Sukurberia. Residents alleged that overloaded dumpers and timber-laden trucks continued to pass through the area without action from the authorities.

One of the alleged violations involved a dumper bearing registration number HR 58F 4110, whose challan reportedly expired on April 24, 2026. Locals further claimed that transport documents mentioned only “Assam” as the destination without specifying the crusher unit or delivery point. Villagers alleged that the consignment was headed to Kamal Crusher at Borihat Dhupguri.

Residents also alleged that 15 to 20 timber trucks routinely entered Assam through the same route during night hours. Villagers warned that the continued movement of overloaded vehicles was damaging roads and posing risks to public safety and nearby properties.
