PM Modi Showcases Manipur and Assam Heritage with Shirui Lily and Muga Silk Gifts to Giorgia Meloni

Imphal, May 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s cultural heritage and indigenous craftsmanship during his diplomatic engagement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by presenting a Shirui Lily silk stole and a Muga Silk stole, showcasing traditions from Northeast India.

The Shirui Lily-inspired silk stole brought attention to Manipur’s rich cultural identity and artistic traditions. The design draws inspiration from the Shirui Lily, a rare flower found exclusively on the Shirui Kashong Peak in Manipur’s Ukhrul district. Recognised for its pale pinkish-white petals and bell-shaped bloom, the flower is closely associated with the Tangkhul Naga community and is regarded as a symbol of cultural identity, purity and pride.

The stole reflects the folklore and traditions of the Tangkhul people while also showcasing the intricate handwoven textile heritage of the Northeast. The gift also carried symbolic significance in an international context, as the lily has historically held a place in Italian culture where it is linked with purity, elegance and artistic expression, frequently appearing in Renaissance-era art and architecture.

Modi also presented a Muga Silk stole, drawing attention to Assam’s centuries-old weaving tradition. Often referred to as the “Golden Silk” of the Brahmaputra Valley, Muga Silk is regarded as one of India’s rarest and most prestigious natural textiles.

Muga silk is known for its distinctive natural golden sheen and is traditionally produced without artificial dyes, reflecting a long-standing sustainable weaving practice unique to Assam. The textile is also valued for its durability and strength and is considered among the strongest natural fibres in the world. Its natural lustre is known to deepen over time, while features such as moisture absorption and ultraviolet resistance add to its versatility.

Officials said the gifts represented a blend of diplomacy and cultural storytelling, with the traditional textiles symbolising shared values and heritage while projecting the cultural richness of India on the global stage.
