AGARTALA: Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Wednesday sought Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu’s intervention over around 18 bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) that have remained pending for years.
Debbarma, accompanied by TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, met the Governor and requested him to examine the bills pending at different stages.
Debbarma said the elected Sixth Schedule council had passed bills concerning indigenous people, including land rights, administrative reforms, recruitment policy and customary laws, but they could not become laws without the required approval of the Governor.
He said the issue had been raised with successive Governors and that a written representation had been submitted seeking intervention over the prolonged delay.
Debbarma claimed that nearly 18 bills had remained pending at different stages since around 2007 and said the issue had also been raised before the Supreme Court.
He said the delay had created difficulties for elected representatives, as constituents continued to question them about the implementation of measures intended for their welfare.
Following the meeting, Debbarma said he had requested the Governor to look into the bills forwarded by the TTAADC over the years and expressed hope that the spirit of the Sixth Schedule would be upheld.
