Release of 14 Kuki Detainees Expected Amid Efforts to Ease Tensions in Manipur

Fourteen Kuki detainees are expected to be released on June 1 as part of ongoing efforts to reduce tensions and promote reconciliation among communities affected by unrest in Manipur, according to sources familiar with the development.

Sources indicated that the release is likely to take place around 2 p.m. in the presence of representatives of the state government and elected leaders, including Naga legislators. However, authorities have not yet disclosed the venue of the proposed handover or provided details regarding the groups involved in facilitating the process.

The anticipated release comes in the aftermath of a series of hostage-taking incidents that reportedly followed a deadly ambush at Kotlen in Kangpokpi district on May 13. According to sources, around 20 Naga civilians were allegedly taken hostage by Kuki groups from various locations following the incident.

In what was described as a retaliatory response, Naga groups allegedly detained members of the Kuki community. Subsequent rounds of negotiations reportedly resulted in the release of several individuals from both sides, helping to reduce tensions to some extent.

Despite these developments, some people remain in captivity. Sources said that as of Sunday morning, 14 Kuki detainees and six Naga hostages were yet to be released.

The proposed release of the 14 detainees is being viewed as a positive step towards confidence-building and improving relations between the affected communities. Observers believe the move could contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and normalcy in the region.

However, concerns continue over the six Naga hostages whose whereabouts remain uncertain. Community leaders and civil society organisations have repeatedly appealed for the safe release of all remaining detainees and hostages, stressing the need for dialogue and cooperation to prevent further escalation.

Authorities are expected to provide additional details as the process unfolds.
