Shillong, April 19: The April edition of the state-run monthly farmers’ market in Shillong drew around 600 visitors, indicating increasing public interest in direct farm-to-consumer trade and locally sourced agricultural produce.
Held at Risa Colony, opposite St Edmund’s College, the market showcased seasonal crops including potatoes, coriander and spring onion, locally known as jyllang, sourced from various districts across the state. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to improve agricultural marketing by enabling direct interaction between farmers and consumers.
Officials noted that the platform has been helping cultivators secure more favourable prices by reducing dependence on intermediaries. Participation has expanded steadily, with farmer groups, producer collectives and self-help groups offering a mix of fresh and value-added products.
First-time participants highlighted improved access to buyers. A farmer from Ri Bhoi district said the market provided an opportunity to reach customers beyond conventional trading spaces, while another from East Jaintia Hills stated that such initiatives support more sustainable pricing and help broaden market reach.
The event also featured a live kitchen segment where dishes prepared from the featured crops were demonstrated, alongside performances by local musicians under a grassroots initiative promoting regional talent.
A hyperlocal e-commerce platform partnered with the programme to procure produce in bulk directly from farmers, aiming to enhance distribution channels and boost earnings.
Visitors pointed to the availability of organic and locally distinctive products as a key attraction. One tourist described the market as a unique experience, highlighting items such as bamboo-smoked fish.
Launched in January 2026, the monthly farmers’ market has consistently rotated its focus on seasonal produce, with earlier editions featuring oranges, pumpkins, strawberries, black pepper, bananas and sesame seeds. Authorities regard the initiative as part of a sustained push to strengthen market access and support the state’s agricultural economy.
