Seuj Society Launches Statewide Nahor Plantation Drive in Assam on World Environment Day 2026

Udalguri–Sonitpur, June 5: Marking World Environment Day 2026, environmental organisation Seuj Society carried out a statewide plantation campaign of Nahor (Mesua ferrea) trees across Assam on Friday, dedicating this year’s observance to renowned Assamese artist and environmental enthusiast Zubeen Garg.

The initiative, described by admirers as a tribute to the “child of nature”, was formally inaugurated at Ward No. 1 in Dhekiajuli near the Shiva Temple, the public library premises and the Tea Tribe Employees’ Council office. The programme began with the plantation of Nahor saplings by Kajal Bora, Principal of Lakshminath Bezbaroa Academy and a former associate of Zubeen Garg.

The inauguration event was assisted by journalist Naba Kumar Deka of Orang, while the saplings were provided by retired Sub-Divisional Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer Dr. Umesh Chandra Das, advisor to Seuj Society, along with Girish Chandra Das, known for initiating the Dhekiajuli Tree Bihu movement.

Several members of Seuj Society participated in the campaign, including Branch Coordinator Dolly Das, Youth Coordinator Shailab Bhattacharya, Assistant Coordinator Bablu Ansari and Monmayuri Das. In Ghagra Kachari Gaon under the Ghagra Primary Unit, the plantation drive was led by environmental worker Gakul Boro with support from former forest officer Prafulla Chandra Das and social worker Karuna Dutta Bora.

In Oriontoli, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and Seuj Society’s local unit jointly organised a plantation drive led by AJYCP Chief Advisor Rana Pratap Baruah, environmental worker Shewali Devi and Seuj Society Technology Coordinator Nazmal Hussain Bhuyan. Saplings were planted in educational institutions and religious premises as part of the campaign.

A similar programme was held under the Singri Primary Unit at the Singri (Ghoramari) Women’s Association premises under the supervision of environmental activist Nayanmoni Devi, where participants paid tribute to Zubeen Garg through the plantation of Nahor saplings.

The campaign also extended across several districts, including Dhakuakhana, Abhayapuri, Jorhat, Guwahati, Barpeta and Tezpur, with coordinated plantation drives led by various Seuj Society representatives. According to organisers, more than one thousand Nahor saplings were planted across Assam under the leadership of Seuj Society president Sanjoy Baruah, concluding the statewide initiative.
