Udalguri-Sonitpur, Oct 27: Sonitpur District Commissioner Anand Kumar Das on Tuesday released the 50th turtle rescued by wildlife rescuer Saurav Borkataki into the pond at Chitralekha Udyan, recognising his 31-year contribution to wildlife conservation.
Borkataki, a renowned snake expert and wildlife rescuer from Sonitpur district, has been releasing rescued turtles into the pond as part of his conservation efforts. The latest turtle was brought wrapped in a traditional Assamese gamosa before being released by the district commissioner.
Speaking to the media, Das described the achievement as significant for Sonitpur and Assam, highlighting Borkataki’s dedication to wildlife protection since he began his conservation work in 1995.
The turtles rescued by Borkataki were recovered from various locations, including roads, riverbanks, drains and markets, where they were often found in vulnerable conditions.
Explaining why he chose the pond at Chitralekha Udyan, Borkataki said the enclosed site provides a safe and suitable environment for the reptiles, preventing them from easily straying into potentially dangerous surroundings. He added that the turtles are kept under scientifically appropriate conditions and receive proper care from park staff.
The milestone highlights the importance of wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation, while recognising Borkataki’s longstanding efforts to protect turtles and other wildlife.
