Supreme Court Refuses to Stay Meghalaya High Court Bail Order in Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to stay a Meghalaya High Court order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in 2025, though the top court expressed reservations over the High Court’s decision.

A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu observed that while it had concerns regarding the reasoning of the High Court, it was not inclined to suspend the bail order at this stage, noting that the accused has already been released from jail and is presently in Shillong in compliance with the conditions imposed by the trial court.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Meghalaya government, argued that the allegations against Sonam Raghuvanshi were of a serious nature. He submitted that bail ought not to have been granted on technical grounds given the gravity of the offence.

The case relates to the alleged murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, an incident that had drawn significant nationwide attention. The matter remains under judicial scrutiny as legal proceedings continue.
