Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma Urges Amit Shah to Expedite NRC, ILP and CAA in Tripura

Agartala, May 29: Ranjit Debbarma on May 29 wrote to Amit Shah demanding immediate measures to “detect, detain and deport” illegal migrants from Tripura, alleging that the issue poses a serious threat to the country’s internal security and sovereignty.

In his letter, the Tipra Motha Party MLA urged the Centre to expedite the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Inner Line Permit (ILP), Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 in Tripura to identify and remove illegal migrants.

Debbarma alleged that illegal infiltration into the state has continued for years due to administrative lapses and the alleged support of “dishonest political leaders and officials”. He claimed that several illegal migrants had managed to obtain official documents such as Aadhaar cards, voter identity cards, ration cards, passports and PAN cards using forged supporting documents.

The MLA further alleged that Tripura was being used as a transit corridor by illegal migrants to enter other parts of the country. While some were reportedly engaged in livelihood activities, he claimed that others were involved in unlawful and extremist activities.

“The illegal migrants are changing the demographic structure of Tripura as well as India. They have been creating land, economic, educational, health, unemployment and trans-border crime-related problems on a massive scale,” Debbarma stated in the letter.

He also claimed to have previously written to the Governor, Chief Minister, Home Secretary, Chief Secretary, Director General of Police of Tripura, BSF officials, Assam Rifles authorities and district administrations regarding the issue, but alleged that no effective action had been taken so far.

Reiterating his demand for the implementation of the ILP system in Tripura, Debbarma alleged that infiltration had increased significantly in the absence of such a mechanism.

Referring to recent reports regarding the formation of a high-power committee comprising retired judges and senior officials to examine the issue of illegal migrants, he described the move as a timely initiative aimed at maintaining law and order, internal security and the sovereignty of the country.
