Tripura Assembly Convenes Special Session to Push Women’s Reservation and Constitutional Safeguards

Agartala, April 30: A one-day session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly commenced on April 30 with a focus on strengthening constitutional protections for women and advancing efforts to implement reservation measures in legislatures.

Speaker Rampada Jamatia opened proceedings by reading obituaries for former minister Kartik Kanya Debbarma and veteran singer Asha Bhosle, marking the formal start of the session.

Subsequently, Government Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy moved a motion aimed at reinforcing constitutional rights for women. The proposal called for building consensus among political parties across the country and urged the Centre to take immediate steps to begin delimitation based on the 2011 Census.

The motion also pressed for renewed efforts to pass the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which seeks to provide one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The initiative is positioned as a key step towards enhancing women’s representation in governance.

The special sitting was convened by the Speaker following a petition submitted by 17 legislators, including Saha Roy, reflecting a coordinated push within the Assembly to prioritise the issue.

The session underscores Tripura’s attempt to contribute to the broader national discourse on women’s political representation and constitutional equity.
