The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged brutal assault on a woman at Tata Kalibari under Takarjala Police Station in West Tripura district and has directed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident.
The direction was issued by THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh after the Commission examined a report published in a local daily newspaper highlighting the incident and the subsequent police response.
According to the Commission, the newspaper report alleged that more than 72 hours had elapsed since the incident, but no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered by the Officer-in-Charge of Takarjala Police Station, Rathin Debbarma. The report also questioned the response of statutory bodies, including the Women’s Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
The report stated that the woman had been accused of maintaining an illicit relationship and was summoned before a village “Panchayat Salishi” (informal village hearing). During the meeting, she was allegedly subjected to a brutal physical assault, with the report claiming that some women inserted a bamboo stick into her private parts.
According to the report examined by the Commission, the victim was initially admitted to Bishalgarh District Hospital before being shifted to AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala, where she underwent a major surgical procedure. It further claimed that while receiving treatment, the woman identified the individuals allegedly responsible for the assault.
The Commission also took note of allegations that supporters of the TIPRA Motha Party had threatened the victim’s relatives during their visit to the hospital.
Considering the gravity of the allegations, the THRC directed that a copy of the newspaper report along with its order be forwarded to the DGP, Tripura. The Commission instructed the police chief to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into all the allegations contained in the report and submit a detailed report before the Commission.
According to the order, the matter has been listed for hearing on July 27, 2026, when the Commission will consider the inquiry report submitted by the DGP. The case will next come up for hearing on the same date.
