A vehicle carrying around 60 LPG cylinders was seized in Assam’s Bongaigaon district after local residents allegedly intercepted it on suspicion of illegal transportation and possible black marketing of cooking gas cylinders.
According to local sources, residents of Kirtanpara market detained the vehicle on Thursday night and subsequently informed Borghola Police, who reached the spot and took possession of the consignment. The vehicle was reportedly transporting approximately 60 LPG cylinders.
The incident comes at a time when consumers and commercial establishments in several areas are facing an alleged shortage of cooking gas cylinders. Residents questioned how such a large consignment from a gas agency located in the Panbari area of Chirang district was allegedly being transported to an individual identified as Salam from Dumuria in Abhayapuri.
Locals alleged that the cylinders may have been intended for sale in the black market, where LPG cylinders are reportedly being sold at prices ranging between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000. However, these allegations have not been independently verified.
The seizure has triggered concern among consumers, particularly as several hotels and restaurants are reportedly struggling with shortages of LPG cylinders.
Meanwhile, allegations have surfaced that journalists who arrived at the scene to cover the incident were prevented from collecting information by police personnel. There was no immediate response from the police regarding the allegation.
Authorities are expected to investigate the legality of the transportation and ascertain the intended destination of the cylinders.
