ZPM Nominates Spokesperson K Laltluangkima for Mizoram Rajya Sabha Election

The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) in Mizoram on Wednesday announced party spokesperson K Laltluangkima as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election.

ZPM vice-president C Lalnunnema formally declared Laltluangkima as the party’s nominee during a function held at the party office in Aizawl for the election to the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat, scheduled for June 18.

The announcement comes as opposition parties are yet to finalise their candidates. The Congress, which holds one seat in the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, is unlikely to contest the election, according to party spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei.

In the current Assembly, the ZPM holds 27 seats, while the Mizo National Front (MNF) has 10 and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has two legislators. With its numerical strength, the ruling party is widely expected to have an advantage in the election.

However, the MNF is expected to announce its candidate soon, with party treasurer Lalruatkima indicating that preparations are underway for participation in the contest.
