Guwahati, June 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that 17 per cent of households in the state that have adopted rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar scheme are now receiving zero electricity bills.
Sharing the update on social media, the Chief Minister said the initiative has delivered significant economic relief to consumers while strengthening energy security and advancing renewable energy adoption in the state.
Sarma stated that Assam currently ranks among the top five states in the country in implementing the PM Surya Ghar Scheme, which promotes rooftop solar installations in residential households through financial incentives and subsidies.
He added that the scheme is enabling families to substantially reduce monthly electricity expenses while contributing to Assam’s long-term clean energy and sustainability goals.
According to the Chief Minister, “Seventeen per cent of Assam’s solar households have paid zero electricity bills,” describing it as a key indicator of the transformation brought about by the scheme in the state’s energy landscape.
The PM Surya Ghar initiative aims to encourage households to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar systems, reducing dependence on conventional power sources and promoting wider adoption of renewable energy.
The state government has been actively supporting the scheme as part of its broader strategy to expand clean energy usage and deliver long-term economic benefits to consumers.
