Guwahati, Feb 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 10 assured action following allegations of encroachment and construction of a madrasa on Rajbari (royal court) land at Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahom kingdom.
Addressing a public meeting in Sivasagar, the chief minister responded to concerns raised by members of the Ahom community, who alleged that the historically significant Rajbari land had been encroached upon and that a madrasa and a mosque were constructed despite objections. Sarma said the land is historically recognised as Rajbari and must be cleared.
He directed that those involved be informed of the site’s historical status and said the construction would have to be shifted, adding that the government would proceed with land acquisition if necessary. The chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting Assam’s historical heritage.
Charaideo, located in upper Assam, is regarded as the spiritual and political centre of the Ahom dynasty, which ruled the region for nearly 600 years.
