Assam Tea Exports Rise by 40 Million Kg After 25 Years: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, Feb 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 11 announced that tea exports from the state have increased by 40 million kilograms after a gap of 25 years, describing the development as a major milestone for Assam’s flagship industry.

Addressing reporters, Sarma said overall tea production in the state has risen by 50 million kilograms. He added that nearly 50 per cent of the total output now comprises orthodox tea, a premium segment that commands higher value in international markets.

In comparison, tea production in South India has declined by 10 million kilograms during the same period, the Chief Minister noted.

Sarma further stated that total tea sales from Assam have increased by 19 million kilograms, reflecting improved market performance and stronger demand.

Highlighting the sector’s revival, he said the growth in exports and production signals renewed global confidence in Assam tea, particularly orthodox varieties that have gained traction overseas.

Calling it a significant boost to the state’s economy, the Chief Minister emphasised that the tea industry remains one of Assam’s largest employers and a key contributor to rural livelihoods.
