Imphal, Feb 28: Security forces have intensified operations against illegal arms networks in Manipur, recovering a large cache of sophisticated weapons, explosives and ammunition in two successive operations across Imphal West and Churachandpur districts on February 26 and 27.
On February 27, a search operation was carried out in the Sangaithel Makha Leikai area under Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West district, leading to the recovery of multiple firearms and explosive materials. The seized items included a modified .303 rifle without a magazine, two locally made bolt-action single-barrel guns and four pistols with magazines. Security personnel also recovered two No.36 high-explosive grenades without detonators and one high-explosive bomb.
The ammunition haul comprised 15 rounds of .303 ammunition along with three charger clips, eight .303 blank cartridges and one SLR blank cartridge. In addition, one bulletproof vest fitted with two iron plates, two camouflage helmets and three bags were seized, suggesting preparedness for possible armed confrontation. Officials said the materials had been concealed in the area and were recovered based on specific intelligence inputs.
In a separate operation on February 26, security forces conducted a combing exercise in the forested area of Thinghijang village under Churachandpur Police Station in Churachandpur district. During the search, personnel recovered an AK-47 rifle with a magazine, three single-barrel guns, one bolt-action single-barrel firearm and a bolt-action sniper rifle equipped with a scope.
Seven 7.62 mm fired cartridge cases and two SLR magazines were also seized from the site, indicating prior use of the weapons. Officials stated that the recoveries highlight ongoing attempts by armed elements to stockpile weapons in remote and vulnerable areas of the state.
Authorities have initiated further investigations to determine the source and ownership of the recovered arms and explosives. Security measures have been strengthened in sensitive locations, with officials reiterating their resolve to dismantle illegal arms networks and restore peace and stability in Manipur.
