Dibrugarh: Residents of Jungaon under Haldibari Panchayat in the Khowang Legislative Assembly constituency have threatened to boycott the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, citing lack of basic infrastructure such as roads and drinking water. The aggrieved villagers staged a protest on Wednesday against the deplorable condition of roads in the area and warned of a complete poll boycott if their demands are not met. They alleged that repeated appeals to local MLA Chakradhar Gogoi have gone unaddressed.
“We have submitted several applications, but no action has been taken. Instead, we were threatened when we approached him,” a villager claimed, expressing frustration over years of neglect. Residents also raised concerns over the absence of safe drinking water in the village. They alleged that although funds were sanctioned under the Jal Jeevan Mission, no visible progress has been made on the ground.

The protesters warned that they would not allow political candidates to enter the village during the election campaign unless they receive a written assurance for the construction of a concrete road and proper water supply facilities. Locals further alleged that despite being in power for nearly a decade, the MLA has failed to prioritise development in the area. “Compared to other constituencies, our village has seen little to no improvement. We demand immediate action,” another resident said. The protest highlights growing discontent among rural voters ahead of the Assembly polls, with basic infrastructure emerging as a key election issue.
