Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh Begins Jiribam Visit to Boost Peace Efforts Amid Ethnic Tensions

Imphal, April 4: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on April 4 commenced a three-day visit to Jiribam district, undertaking his first road journey to the region since ethnic violence broke out between communities.

The visit is being seen as a significant outreach initiative aimed at restoring normalcy and rebuilding trust between Meitei and Kuki-Hmar communities, which have remained divided during the prolonged unrest. The Chief Minister is accompanied by a delegation of MLAs, including representatives from the Meitei community, along with state BJP president A Sarda Devi.

According to officials, Singh is scheduled to arrive in Jiribam around 1 pm, where he will engage with community leaders, civil society organisations and local residents to assess the situation on the ground and promote dialogue for reconciliation.

The visit comes in the wake of recent directions from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had called on the state government to intensify peacebuilding efforts and address the prevailing trust deficit in Manipur.

During the tour, the Chief Minister is expected to inspect key facilities, including the Leingangpokpi police outpost and Jiribam District Hospital, reviewing both security preparedness and the delivery of essential services.

Officials described the visit as a critical step towards stabilising the situation in the violence-affected state, with a focus on fostering long-term peace and rebuilding public confidence.
