Guwahati, April 10: Assam has registered its highest-ever voter turnout in an assembly election, with participation reaching 85.38 per cent, according to the Election Commission of India. The figure surpasses the state’s previous record of 84.67 per cent set during the 2016 polls, marking a significant milestone in electoral engagement.
The latest reflects a notable surge in voter enthusiasm across constituencies, with officials highlighting the steady rise in participation as an indication of growing public confidence in the democratic process. The strong turnout has positioned Assam among the leading states in terms of voter engagement in recent assembly elections.
A prominent feature of this election has been the higher participation of women voters, who recorded a turnout of 85.96 per cent, slightly exceeding the 84.80 per cent turnout among male voters. This trend continues to underline the increasing role of women in shaping electoral outcomes in the state.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar described the development as a “historic testimony” to the vibrancy of democracy, lauding the people of Assam for their active and enthusiastic participation in the electoral process.
The record-breaking turnout underscores a strengthening democratic culture in the state, driven by heightened awareness and citizen involvement.
