Debabrata Saikia Questions Exit Poll Credibility, Cites ‘Silent Voters’ Ahead of Assam Results

Guwahati, May 2: Debabrata Saikia, Leader of Opposition and Congress candidate from the Nazira Assembly constituency, on May 2 expressed scepticism over exit poll projections for the Assam Assembly elections, stating that such forecasts have often failed to reflect actual outcomes.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Saikia said he does not rely on exit polls, pointing to previous instances where predictions did not align with final results. Referring to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he noted that forecasts had indicated a decisive win for the Bharatiya Janata Party, whereas the eventual result differed significantly.

Saikia said the political environment in Assam appears distinct this time, suggesting that many voters have chosen not to openly reveal their preferences. He argued that this silence could indicate a shift in public sentiment and a possible inclination towards change.

The Congress leader further alleged that some sections of voters were hesitant to discuss their choices due to fear of retaliation by ruling party workers. He also cited concerns such as alleged governance issues and anti-incumbency as factors that could influence the outcome.

Emphasising the importance of voter behaviour, Saikia maintained that so-called “silent voters” could play a decisive role in shaping the final results when votes are counted.
