Guwahati, May 6: A targeted digital campaign centred on storytelling, meme culture, and youth-oriented messaging has emerged as a key factor behind the Bharatiya Janata Party’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, securing a third consecutive term in the state under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Political observers and campaign analysts noted that the party’s strong online outreach significantly influenced public perception, particularly among young and first-time voters. By leveraging short-form videos, emotionally driven narratives, and meme-based content, the BJP effectively projected Sarma as a decisive leader focused on both safeguarding Assamese identity and advancing development.
The campaign prominently highlighted themes of cultural identity, indigenous rights, and governance, allowing the ruling party to dominate the digital discourse throughout the election period. Its social media ecosystem consistently reinforced Sarma’s image as an accessible and assertive leader with a strong connection to the electorate.
In contrast, the Indian National Congress struggled to match the scale and impact of the BJP’s digital strategy, with analysts suggesting that this gap contributed to the opposition’s limited reach, particularly in urban and semi-urban constituencies.
The electoral outcome reflected this advantage. The BJP secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland Peoples Front—won 10 seats each, taking the National Democratic Alliance tally to 102. The Congress managed 19 seats, with other regional parties registering limited gains.
The result ensured another term for Sarma as Chief Minister and extended the BJP-led alliance’s dominance in Assam’s political landscape.
