Dhubri, May 22: A river patrol team of Assam Police seized four cattle during a boat-based operation in the Kuntir Char area of Dhubri district as authorities intensified efforts against alleged illegal cattle transportation along the Brahmaputra river network.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Dhubri Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Pritam Das after police received information regarding the movement of cattle through river routes reportedly used to evade highway checkpoints. According to officials, smugglers have increasingly relied on isolated char areas along the Brahmaputra to transport animals while avoiding regular surveillance.
Acting on the inputs, the police launched a targeted raid using patrol boats and intercepted the cattle consignment during the operation. Officials said no arrests had been made so far, but an investigation had been initiated to identify those involved and determine the source of the cattle as well as the ownership details of the boat allegedly used in the transport.
The operation comes days after a joint meeting involving the Dhubri district administration, the District Markaz Committee and the local Eidgah Committee. Following the discussions, the religious bodies had issued a voluntary public appeal prohibiting the slaughter of cows and buffaloes within Dhubri town limits.
Police officials stated that surveillance and river patrol activities across vulnerable char areas would be strengthened further as authorities continue efforts to curb illegal cattle movement through waterways in the district.
