Delhi: Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been fined Rs 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his team’s crushing 89-run defeat against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 on Thursday. The heavy loss not only ended Chennai’s playoff hopes but also added further disappointment for Gaikwad, who now faces disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to an official IPL statement, this was CSK’s second over-rate offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations. As a result, Gaikwad was fined Rs 24 lakh, while the remaining members of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever amount was lower.

The defeat proved disastrous for Chennai, who were completely outplayed while chasing a massive target of 230 runs set by Gujarat Titans. The batting line-up failed to keep pace with the required run rate as Gujarat dominated in all departments. Speaking after the match, Gaikwad admitted that his side had been thoroughly outperformed. He said CSK wanted to approach the steep chase aggressively and attempt to finish the target as quickly as possible, but acknowledged that chasing 230 against Gujarat’s strong bowling attack was always going to be difficult. The CSK skipper credited Gujarat Titans for their all-round performance and accepted that the opposition deserved the victory. His comments reflected the frustration within the Chennai camp after another disappointing campaign.
The five-time champions have now failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for the third consecutive season, raising serious questions about the team’s strategy, squad balance and future direction. Cricket experts believe the franchise could face several difficult decisions regarding player retention and team rebuilding ahead of the next season. For Chennai Super Kings supporters, the latest defeat marks another painful chapter in what has been an underwhelming period for one of the league’s most successful franchises.
