GUWAHATI, May 25: The Assam government on Monday introduced the proposed Uniform Civil Code legislation in the Assam Legislative Assembly, nearly two weeks after the state Cabinet approved the draft Bill.
On behalf of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Atul Bora tabled “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026” during the ongoing Assembly session.
The Bill is scheduled to be taken up for discussion and possible passage on May 27.
The draft legislation had earlier received Cabinet approval on May 13 during the first Cabinet meeting held after the beginning of the Chief Minister’s second term. The meeting took place at the No. 1 State Guest House at Koinadhara in Guwahati.
Following the Cabinet decision, Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that the proposed legislation would be introduced during the current session of the Assembly, which began on May 21.
According to the state government, the proposed law will not apply to Scheduled Tribes (Hills) and Scheduled Tribes (Plain). Traditional religious customs, practices and rituals have also been kept outside the scope of the legislation.
The proposed Uniform Civil Code seeks to address four principal areas: minimum age for marriage, prohibition of polygamy, equal rights for daughters in parental property, and issues related to live-in relationships.
The introduction of the Bill marks a significant legislative step by the Assam government towards creating a common civil framework on selected social and family matters in the state.
