Guwahati, May 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 26 reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to providing government employment to two lakh youths, while underlining the need to build a generation of entrepreneurs capable of creating jobs and driving long-term economic growth in the state.
Speaking during the third day of the Assam Assembly session, Sarma said fulfilling the employment commitment made during the elections remained a major responsibility of the government. He stated that even if people did not remind him of the promise, he considered it a personal responsibility attached to his role as Chief Minister.
He said the government’s strategy would extend beyond public sector recruitment and would also focus on developing a self-reliant youth population by encouraging entrepreneurship, agriculture and improved utilisation of Assam’s resources. According to Sarma, the state should not solely depend on government jobs as a means of employment generation.
Highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship, he said Assam required a young generation equipped with business skills and innovation, adding that alongside the two lakh government jobs, another segment of youth should be empowered to create employment opportunities for others. He noted that the vision was to develop individuals capable of creating jobs for “ten others”, strengthening the wider economy through enterprise-led growth.
The chief minister also emphasised the growing role of women in Assam’s economic landscape, saying self-help groups had transformed aspirations among women across the state. He remarked that many women now sought to contribute actively to the economic wellbeing of their families in addition to managing household responsibilities.
Sarma said women in Assam increasingly wanted to move beyond traditional roles and participate in broader economic activities. He called for collective efforts to further strengthen and expand the self-help group movement in a meaningful way across the state.
The remarks formed part of the government’s broader roadmap for the next five years, focusing on employment generation, entrepreneurship development, rural economic expansion and enhanced participation of women in Assam’s economic growth.
