PGSU Urges Administration to Address Student Accommodation Issues and Improve Road Safety

Guwahati, May 31: The Postgraduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of Gauhati University submitted a memorandum to the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Commissioner, Swapneel Paul, seeking immediate intervention on concerns affecting students living in private paying guest (PG) accommodations and on road safety around the university campus.

Representatives of the union highlighted several issues related to the functioning of PG facilities located near the university. They called for reforms to the existing fee structure, arguing that many accommodation providers collected payments for an entire year at the time of admission. The union proposed a more flexible system under which students would pay only for the period they actually stayed in the accommodation.

The memorandum also raised concerns about the quality of services provided by certain PG establishments. The student body urged the authorities to ensure that accommodation providers offered food and facilities that matched the fees charged. In addition, the union demanded action against reports of inappropriate behaviour by some proprietors towards student residents.

Road safety formed another key part of the submission. PGSU representatives pointed to the risk of accidents near university entry points and requested the prompt installation of traffic-calming measures and adequate road safety signage at all gates of the institution.

The union stated that the welfare, rights and safety of students remained its foremost priority. It expressed confidence that the district administration would take appropriate measures to address the concerns raised and implement necessary solutions at the earliest opportunity.
