A major development has emerged in the Gangapur attack case in Assam’s Nalbari district, with the prime accused, Roz Ali, reportedly sustaining injuries during a police encounter conducted by Assam Police in Mukalmua on June 1.
The case has drawn widespread attention following a violent attack on Saturday night that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and left 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka critically injured. The two were allegedly attacked while travelling on a scooter near Gangapur under Mukalmua.
Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata and Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union, died at the scene. Mridumudra Deka suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. She is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where her condition remains critical.
According to allegations, the attack was carried out by Roz Ali and Ashik Ali. Following the incident, police launched an extensive search operation to trace the accused, which subsequently led to the encounter involving Roz Ali.
The incident has triggered outrage across the state, with several local organisations and residents alleging that the attack was linked to the young woman’s rejection of a proposal from one of the accused. Some groups have described the case as an instance of “love jihad”. However, police have not officially confirmed any such motive, and investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances behind the attack.
Reacting to the incident, Jayanta Malla Baruah expressed concern and described “love jihad” as a growing social challenge in Assam. He stated that society must remain vigilant and called for strict action against those found responsible. The legislator also expressed grief over the death of Madhurjya Barman and wished the injured young woman a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, Assam Police continue to investigate the case to determine the exact sequence of events and establish the motive behind the attack. Further details are awaited as the probe progresses.
