Aizawl, June 2: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Mizoram Police seized morphine and heroin valued at more than Rs 6 crore and arrested three persons from Assam in Saitual district, officials said on June 1.
The operation was carried out by a team of the Saitual District Executive Force following specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotics through the region. Acting on the information, police intercepted a truck bearing an Assam registration number on May 31 while it was travelling from Manipur towards Aizawl.
During a detailed inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered 13 packets of morphine weighing a total of 6.611 kilograms concealed inside a specially built secret compartment near the driver’s seat.
According to officials, the seized morphine has an estimated value of more than Rs 6.7 crore in the illegal drug market, making it one of the significant narcotics recoveries in the region.
Apart from the morphine, the police team also recovered 12 grams of heroin from the vehicle. The seized heroin is estimated to be worth around Rs 2.4 lakh.
Three individuals, all residents of Assam, were arrested in connection with the seizure. Authorities have not yet disclosed their identities as the investigation is still underway.
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe to trace the origin and intended destination of the narcotics. Investigators are also examining possible links between the accused and larger drug trafficking networks operating across the Northeast region.
Officials said further investigations are in progress and additional arrests or recoveries may follow based on information gathered during the course of the inquiry.
