African Swine Fever Outbreak Prompts Restrictions and Pig Culling in Assam’s Doomdooma

The Tinsukia district administration has imposed stringent restrictions across Doomdooma Co-District following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Ouguri village under Rupai Siding, amid concerns over the spread of the highly contagious disease among pigs.

District Commissioner and District Magistrate Sumit Sattawan issued an order under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, declaring Ouguri village as the epicentre of the outbreak. Under the containment measures, areas within a one-kilometre radius of the village have been marked as infected zones, while regions falling within a 10-kilometre radius have been placed under surveillance.

As part of efforts to contain the disease, the administration has initiated a pig culling drive in the infected zone from June 9 to June 11 in accordance with the National Action Plan for Control, Containment and Eradication of African Swine Fever. Officials of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department are supervising the operation.

Authorities have also imposed a 30-day prohibition on the sale, transportation and trade of pigs, pork and pork products throughout Doomdooma Co-District. All pork outlets have been ordered to remain closed during the period, and the movement of pigs and pork products to neighbouring districts and Arunachal Pradesh has been suspended until further orders.

Officials stated that although African Swine Fever poses no threat to humans, it is a highly infectious and frequently fatal viral disease in pigs, capable of causing severe economic losses to farmers and the livestock sector.

The administration has appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with disease-control measures. It also warned that any violation of the restrictions would invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Residents seeking information or assistance regarding the outbreak have been advised to contact the Animal Husbandry Department helpline at 1962 or the District Control Room at 0374-2331000.
