Piyush Hazarika Inspects Assam’s First Underground Irrigation Pilot Project in Boko

Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Piyush Hazarika on June 20 visited Boko Rajapara to review the progress of the Singua Water Supply Pilot Project, an innovative irrigation initiative aimed at improving agricultural productivity in the region.

Implemented by the State Irrigation Department, the project is expected to provide assured irrigation facilities to around 1,427 hectares of farmland. The scheme has received financial approval of ₹34.8 crore from the Central Government and is regarded as the first project of its kind in Assam.

The Singua Water Supply Pilot Project departs from conventional irrigation methods by using an underground pipeline network instead of open canals to supply water directly to agricultural fields. The system is expected to minimise water loss, improve efficiency and ensure a dependable supply of irrigation water during the cultivation season.

During his inspection of Rajapara and Dirima, Hazarika stressed the importance of cooperation from local residents and stakeholders to facilitate the timely completion of the project. He said the initiative represents a major step towards modernising irrigation infrastructure and strengthening the agricultural sector in Assam.

The minister observed that efficient irrigation is essential for increasing crop yields and improving the livelihoods of farmers. He expressed confidence that the project would serve as a model for similar schemes in other parts of the state.

Boko MLA Raju Sahu Mesh, who was present during the visit, underlined the significance of the project for farmers in Boko and neighbouring areas.

Once completed, the Singua Water Supply Pilot Project is expected to enhance agricultural output and provide long-term benefits to thousands of farmers by ensuring a reliable source of irrigation water.
