Four Assam Police Personnel Arrested Over Unauthorised Raid Linked to Man’s Death in Cachar

Cachar, June 27: Four police personnel have been arrested in Assam’s Cachar district after an internal inquiry found that they had allegedly conducted an unauthorised anti-gambling operation that was followed by the death of a man who jumped into a river while attempting to flee.

The arrested personnel have been identified as Santosh Biswas, Kagai Rongmai, Sarbananda Doley and Suraj Borgoyary. The arrests were made on June 26 following departmental proceedings initiated after the incident.

According to reports, the four policemen carried out an anti-gambling raid at Lakhipur on June 15 without informing or obtaining permission from their superior officers. During the operation, a man identified as Mohit Kanu allegedly jumped into the Chiri River while trying to escape from the police.

Kanu’s body was recovered from the river the following day, sparking widespread protests in the area. Family members of the deceased and local residents staged demonstrations, including road blockades and a siege of the local police outpost, demanding action against those involved.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Cachar, suspended the four personnel and ordered a departmental inquiry into the operation.

The inquiry reportedly concluded that the raid had been conducted without authorisation and in violation of established departmental procedures. Based on the findings, the four personnel were arrested and later produced before a court.

The court subsequently remanded all four accused to judicial custody as further legal proceedings continue.
