ASDMA Identifies 366 Landslide-Prone Locations in Guwahati, Urges Residents to Stay Alert During Monsoon

Guwahati, June 30: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has identified 366 landslide-prone locations across Kamrup Metropolitan district, raising fresh concerns over the safety of residents in Guwahati and surrounding areas as the monsoon intensifies.

According to the assessment, the majority of these vulnerable sites are located in hilly regions and areas that have previously witnessed landslides or exhibit signs of soil instability. The identified locations include settlements along hill slopes, zones affected by excavation and hill cutting, and areas undergoing rapid urban development.

ASDMA carried out the identification exercise through field surveys, analysis of past landslide incidents and an evaluation of geographical factors associated with landslide risks.

In light of the findings, authorities have advised people residing in or near the identified locations to remain vigilant, particularly during spells of heavy rainfall. Residents have been urged to watch for early warning signs such as cracks developing on the ground, leaning trees or electric poles, and unusual water seepage, all of which may indicate an impending landslide.

Guwahati has witnessed several landslide incidents in recent years, drawing attention to the increasing vulnerability of ecologically sensitive hill areas. Experts have repeatedly attributed the growing risk to factors including unplanned construction, deforestation and mounting pressure on fragile hill ecosystems.

With the monsoon gaining intensity across the region, authorities have emphasised the need for precautionary measures, prompt reporting of warning signs and active public cooperation to reduce the risk of landslides and minimise potential loss of life and property.
