Tezpur, July 2: The muhurat ceremony of the snake awareness documentary Sarpa Bandhab Sourav Barkataki: A Mission was held on Thursday at the historic Mahabhairav Temple in Tezpur, marking the formal launch of a project aimed at promoting snake conservation and environmental awareness.
The documentary is being produced by the Sarpabandhab Sourav Borkataki Sourav Team and is presented by the Banyam Cultural Forum. The ceremonial launch was led by the team’s president, Pushpa Deka, who inaugurated the project by breaking a coconut in keeping with traditional customs.
The film will be directed by nature enthusiast Sanjoy Baruah, who has served as co-director of Assam’s first science fiction feature film and has directed several short films. Rajballav Sharma has been appointed as the assistant director and will also handle cinematography and editing for the documentary.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior snake rescuer Bapadhan Das, Prakriti Group president Tutumoni Kalita, advisor Rinku Paul, snake rescuer Bijoy Ghosh, and several other nature enthusiasts. The event was hosted by journalist Tarun Das.
Speaking on the occasion, Pushpa Deka announced that selected portions of the documentary will be screened on July 16 to mark World Snake Day. She said the complete documentary will be released after the completion of the censorship process at Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio and will be showcased through educational programmes and public awareness initiatives.
According to the organisers, the documentary seeks to encourage snake conservation, dispel myths and misconceptions associated with snakes, and create greater public awareness about their ecological significance. Guests present at the ceremony expressed confidence that the project would contribute meaningfully to wildlife conservation and environmental education in the state.
