The death toll in the alleged assault case that shook Assam’s Nalbari district has risen to two after 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka succumbed to her injuries at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on July 3, more than a month after the attack.
Mridumudra had been undergoing treatment at GMCH since sustaining critical injuries in the incident that occurred on the night of May 30 at Gangapur under Mukalmua. Despite receiving intensive medical care for over a month, she died on Thursday.
The attack had earlier claimed the life of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata and the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union. He was declared dead at the scene.
According to police and local sources, Mridumudra and Madhurjya were travelling home on a scooter from Nalbari town when they were allegedly intercepted and attacked by Roz Ali. The two were later found by the roadside with multiple injuries. While Madhurjya died on the spot, Mridumudra was initially taken to a local hospital before being referred to GMCH in critical condition.
The incident triggered widespread protests across Nalbari, with residents, student organisations and various local groups demanding immediate action against those responsible for the attack.
The case also attracted public attention after some organisations linked it to allegations of “love jihad”. However, investigators have not officially established any motive behind the incident, and the police have not endorsed those claims.
With Mridumudra’s death, demands for a speedy investigation and prosecution of those accused have intensified.
Meanwhile, the prime accused, Roz Ali, was shot dead during a police encounter conducted by Assam Police in Mukalmua.
