Suspected Food Poisoning After Nam-Kirtan Feast Sends Around 60 People to Assam Medical College Hospital

Around 60 people, including men, women and children, were admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh following a suspected food poisoning incident that led to an emergency situation in the hospital’s casualty department.

According to reports, all those affected had attended a birthday Nam-Kirtan feast organised on June 30 at the residence of Premdhar Sungkorang in Gali Mrigang village under Jonai in Dhemaji district.

Two days after the community feast, several attendees reportedly began experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and severe illness. As the condition of the patients deteriorated, they were first transported to the hospital by ambulance, while others were later brought in by buses and a traveller vehicle for urgent medical treatment.

The arrival of such a large number of patients within a short period placed the hospital’s emergency department under considerable pressure. Doctors and healthcare personnel immediately initiated treatment on a war footing to provide medical care to all those admitted.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning. An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the illness and ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
