Conrad Sangma Calls for Stronger Climate Preparedness at Meghalaya Workshop on El Niño Response

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on July 3 emphasised the importance of proactive planning to address the increasing impact of climate change while speaking at a workshop titled “Developing State Response for El Niño Preparedness: Strengthening Food and Water Security.”

Addressing participants at the programme, Sangma said climate change has become an immediate challenge rather than a distant possibility, making preparedness an essential priority irrespective of evolving weather predictions.

The Chief Minister stressed the need to strengthen resilience by promoting sustainable practices, including natural farming, water conservation, spring rejuvenation and community-driven initiatives aimed at securing food and water resources.

Highlighting the state’s progress in sustainable agriculture, Sangma said Meghalaya’s natural farming initiatives have earned recognition at the national level. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing innovative and locally appropriate strategies suited to the state’s distinct geographical conditions.

Sangma also called for closer cooperation among government departments, local communities and institutions, stating that a coordinated and collective approach is vital for building a climate-resilient Meghalaya capable of responding effectively to future environmental challenges.
