SHILLONG: The Meghalaya taxi drivers’ association has announced the suspension of commercial taxi services between Shillong and Guwahati following recent violence in Shillong, including the alleged attack on tourists from Assam during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally.
The association also warned that taxi services from Assam to Meghalaya could be stopped if the situation was not addressed.
The decision came amid growing tensions between taxi operators in Assam and Meghalaya following the violence during the KSU rally, in which several vehicles were reportedly damaged and people injured.
Taxi drivers’ organisations in both states have reportedly staged protests over the incidents, raising concerns about the safety of passengers and drivers travelling between the two states.
The Meghalaya taxi body demanded adequate security for transport operators and action against those responsible for the alleged attacks. The proposed suspension was expected to affect regular inter-state commuters and tourists travelling between Guwahati and Shillong.
