News Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed confidence that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Shah made the remarks at a press conference in Mumbai on Sunday while highlighting the achievements of the NDA government and the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the implementation of the UCC was part of the government’s broader agenda of ensuring equal rights for citizens. The UCC seeks to provide a common set of personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, irrespective of religious affiliation. Shah said the government had already introduced the UCC in several states and expressed confidence that the remaining NDA-ruled states would follow suit before 2029.

Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam have already passed legislation related to the UCC, while Madhya Pradesh has constituted a committee to prepare a draft. The move to introduce the UCC separately through state governments comes amid continuing political and legal debate over the issue. Shah also highlighted the abolition of triple talaq, the abrogation of Article 370 and the government’s efforts against Left-wing extremism as major achievements. He said more than 14 peace agreements had been signed in the Northeast and claimed that the region was moving towards greater development and stability.
On national security, the Home Minister reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and referred to Operation Sindoor as part of India’s stronger response to security threats. Shah also said reforms under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita had contributed to improvements in conviction rates in several states, while efforts were underway to establish a system aimed at ensuring cases are resolved within three years.
