Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll counting begins under tight security

Vote counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election began at 8 am on Friday under tight security, with the result set to decide the winner of a three-cornered contest between the BJP, Congress and AIUDF.

The counting exercise opened with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Two centres in Nagaon district — Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys’ School — have been designated for the counting process, with 14 tables set up at each venue.

The main contenders are BJP candidate Debashish Sharma, Congress nominee Shivamoni Bora and AIUDF candidate and former MP Badruddin Ajmal.

The bypoll was necessitated by a vacancy in the Nagaon parliamentary constituency.
