CM Sarma recalls Ratan Tata’s legacy in Assam’s healthcare, semiconductor sectors

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to industrialist Ratan Tata on his second death anniversary, highlighting his contributions to cancer care in the state and the development of the semiconductor facility at Jagiroad.

In a post on X, Sarma remembered Tata as both an industrialist and a friend who took a personal interest in Assam’s progress. Recalling their interactions, the Chief Minister said Tata would visit the state and ask what more could be done for its people.

Sarma credited Tata with helping establish the Assam Cancer Care Foundation as a network of healthcare facilities. He said Tata worked with the state government on plans for 17 hospitals across Assam when cancer was claiming thousands of lives every year.

According to Sarma, healthcare remained a priority for Tata during the final years of his life, with Assam playing a significant role in his efforts.

The Chief Minister also recalled Tata’s support for the state’s ambitions in the technology sector, particularly the semiconductor facility being developed at Jagiroad.

Sarma said the facility was expected to become operational by the end of 2026. He described the project as a fulfilment of Tata’s vision for Assam and said the township around the facility had been named Ratan Tata Electronics City in his honour.

He added that Tata’s contributions had helped strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the Northeast while supporting the region’s industrial development.

Tata, former chairman of Tata Sons, died on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86.
