BJP drops Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder from AMC poll list

The BJP on November 3 announced 45 candidates for the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, dropping incumbent Mayor Dipak Majumder, who also represents the Ramnagar Assembly constituency, in line with its “one leader, one post” principle.

Elections to 21 civic bodies across Tripura, including the AMC, are scheduled for November 27.

State BJP president Abhishek Debroy said the party’s core committee had finalised the candidates with approval from the central leadership. The remaining six AMC candidates would be announced on Wednesday, he added.

Explaining Majumder’s exclusion, Debroy said MLAs had responsibilities towards the people, while the party would highlight the mayor’s work during its election campaign.

The BJP had also dropped some sitting corporators due to reservation requirements and internal party considerations, Debroy said, adding that candidate lists for municipalities and nagar panchayats would be announced shortly.

On seat-sharing with ally Tipra Motha Party, he said the BJP had offered it three wards across various municipalities.
