Nine College Students Detained After Overnight Vandalism Spree Shocks Agartala

Agartala city woke up to widespread damage on Saturday, 29 November, after a group of youths allegedly went on a destructive rampage across several parts of the capital, targeting public property and key traffic infrastructure. The early-morning incident triggered alarm among residents as videos of the vandalism quickly spread on social media, prompting swift police action.

According to New Capital Complex Sub-Divisional Police Officer Subrata Barman, the group moved through multiple locations in the city, tearing down flags, festoons and banners while also uprooting traffic glow signboards. The youths allegedly went as far as looting kilometre indicator boards, leaving several stretches of roadway without essential signage.

Once the videos surfaced online, police cross-verified the footage with CCTV recordings from affected areas, enabling officers to identify and detain nine individuals suspected to be involved in the rampage. The SDPO confirmed that all nine detainees confessed to their actions, admitting they were under the influence of alcohol during the episode.

Police said the offenders are college students who were returning home after attending a programme on Friday night, 28 November. A case has been registered against them, while the Tripura Traffic Unit has lodged a separate complaint over the damage to traffic installations. The students are expected to be produced before the court today.

Authorities are currently assessing the scale of the destruction and determining further legal steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to evaluate the extent of losses caused by the vandalism spree.
