Nazira: In Bauli Maidam, a locality under the Nazira sub-division, a young college graduate is setting an inspiring example by transforming waste materials into useful and decorative products while spreading awareness about sustainability. Juthika Gogoi, a resident of Bauli Maidam near the Nazira–Naga Ali road, is the daughter of Putul Gogoi, a school teacher, and Jonmoni Gogoi, a homemaker. She began her schooling at Bauli Maidam High School and later passed her Higher Secondary final examination from Nazira Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School. Juthika recently completed her graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Education Science from Gargaon College.
Her journey into innovation began while she was studying in Class IX, when she participated in the National Children’s Science Congress. Inspired by her teachers at Bauli Maidam High School, including present principal Achyut Kalita and assistant teachers Mitali Goswami and Labanya Dutta Phukan, she presented a district-level project titled “Preparation of Various Materials from Plastic Waste.” The project opened new avenues for her, enabling her to generate income by creating and selling decorative items, dolls and other products from waste materials.
Under the guidance of Dr Rimjhim Bora, professor at Gargaon College, Juthika further strengthened her skills through the National Service Scheme (NSS), gaining valuable experience and expanding her work to a wider platform. At present, she is associated with the ‘Akshar’ Foundation, through which she provides training to school students on making essential items from waste materials. Her efforts have earned recognition, including the second prize in The Craft Competition organised by the UNICEF District Children and Adolescent Cell, Sivasagar. She is also skilled in making puppets for puppet shows. Looking ahead, Juthika Gogoi aspires to learn more about art and craft, including bamboo work, and to train others, helping them become self-reliant while promoting sustainable practices.
