Human–Elephant Conflict Claims Life of Minor Girl in Baksa

Bajali: Human–elephant conflict once again turned fatal in Assam as a wild elephant strayed into a human settlement in Baksa district in the early hours of Sunday, claiming the life of a 14-year-old girl and leaving another injured. The incident has renewed concerns over the growing man–animal conflict in forest-fringe areas of the state. The deceased has been identified as Josna Barman of Khairani village. According to local sources, a wild elephant entered the village at dawn and attacked residents, leading to Josna’s death on the spot. Another minor girl, Madhusmita Barman, was injured in the incident and was promptly rescued by villagers.

Police personnel from Baksa reached the spot soon after being informed and carried out necessary legal formalities. The body of the deceased was sent to Mushalpur Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination, while the injured girl was admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment. Residents of the area said that herds of wild elephants have been frequently entering nearby villages over the past few months, creating fear among locals and posing a constant threat to lives and livelihoods. They alleged that despite repeated incidents, effective long-term preventive measures are yet to be implemented.
