Guwahati, Jan 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday extended warm greetings to the personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on the occasion of its Raising Day, paying tribute to the force for its unwavering courage, professionalism and dedication to saving lives during emergencies.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister acknowledged the vital role played by the NDRF in times of crisis. He said the force has consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment to public service, adding that its swift and selfless response during disasters has protected countless lives across the country.
The NDRF was formally constituted on January 19, 2006, as a specialised and highly trained disaster response unit equipped to handle both natural and man-made calamities. Since its inception, it has grown into a cornerstone of India’s disaster management system, providing rapid and effective response in some of the nation’s most challenging situations.
The force is actively involved in search-and-rescue operations during earthquakes, landslides, building collapses, floods and cyclones, while also being trained to manage chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies. In addition to rescue efforts, NDRF teams provide critical medical assistance and support to affected communities during disasters.
With 16 battalions and 28 Regional Response Centres strategically positioned across the country, the NDRF ensures quick mobilisation and timely intervention during emergencies. The NDRF Academy in Nagpur plays a key role in specialised training and capacity-building, strengthening the force’s ability to respond effectively to evolving disaster scenarios.
